2025, marks a huge milestone in the history books for Elland Silver Band, celebrating 175 years of Elland Silver Band, 30 years of the Youth Band and 10 years of the Community Band.

To mark the celebration the band are launching a Composers Contest and would like to invite composers to write some new music for the three bands. The scores will be assessed by a team of professional jurors including Liz Lane, Dr Philip Wilby & Brett Baker.

Details of the competition are set out below.

We invite you to write:

a) Concert Opener or March – time limit 5 minutes
b) Solo item – time limit 5 minutes
c) Concert finale – time limit 6 minutes

The contest will be divided into 3 categories;

  • Section 1: For Elland Silver Youth Band (3rd Section Standard)
  • Section 2: For Elland Silver Band (1st / Championship Section Standard)
  • Section 3: For Elland Silver Community Band (Ungraded / Training Band Standard) Scored for 8 parts:
    • Eb Soprano/1st Cornet,
    • 2nd Cornet,
    • Solo Horn/1st Horn,
    • 1st Euphonium/Baritone & Trombone,
    • 2nd Baritone & Trombone,
    • Eb & BBb Bass,
    • Percussion

Prizes include:

  1. The publication of your score by Kirklees Music.
  2. Performance of the Winning and runner up compositions in each section by the Elland Silver Band, Youth Band & Community Bands and or soloists.

The scores must be legible.

The piece must be an original work (not an arrangement) and not performed prior to 1st January 2025.

There are no restrictions on composer’s age or country.

Each entry must comprise of a pdf copy of the score, set of band parts, and a cover letter stating the category to be emailed to esbcomposerscontest@outlook.com
